In the historical development of grass and Liubian crafts, these traditional handicrafts are made from natural materials such as thatch, wheat straw, corn husks, and wicker. Originating from the area around Tanghe Township in Hedong District, these crafts initially served practical purposes and were mainly crafted for personal use or local appreciation. However, since 1972, Tanghe Town's grass and willow weaving products began to be exported internationally, significantly boosting the industry's growth. This period marked a turning point, with an increasing variety of styles, more refined techniques, and a broader production scale.
The quality of grass and Liubian crafts produced by the Wanfeng Handicraft Factory in Tanghe Township is renowned for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and high craftsmanship. These items come in various forms, including fruit boxes, paper baskets, flower pot holders, bread boxes, and more. The Liubian craft collection includes items like flower pots, fruit plates, children’s baskets, and bird nests, among others, offering a wide range of 95 different specifications.
The production process of both straw and Liubian crafts follows similar steps: material selection, coloring, soaking, weaving, fumigation, sun-drying, and painting. Each step is done manually, ensuring the quality and uniqueness of every product.
Material selection is crucial. Corn husks must be clean and uniformly white, while wheat straw should retain its natural color. Thatch should be old and long, and wicker should be mature, easy to peel, and approximately 1–5 mm in diameter and 60 cm in length. Coloring is applied according to design requirements and then dried. Soaking helps soften the materials, making them easier to work with. Weaving is done using tools like iron signs, scissors, and rulers. After weaving, the products are cleaned and fumigated to enhance durability and prevent mold. They are then left to dry under the sun before being painted to improve their appearance and longevity.
Tanghe Town’s grass and willow weaving handicrafts have gained international recognition, especially in countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and many others. The region has several advantages for developing this industry. First, it has abundant raw materials due to large-scale wheat and corn cultivation. Second, there is a plentiful labor force, with millions of surplus workers available each year. Third, the area has a long history of crafting, with well-established skills and experience.
