Analysis of Grass Weaving Technology and Quality Characteristics

In the heart of Hedong District, Tanghe Town, a unique traditional craft known as "Liu Bian" has flourished for generations. This art form, made from natural materials such as thatch, wheat straw, corn husks, and wicker, originated in the local area and was initially crafted by hand for personal use and decorative purposes. The transformation began in 1972 when the grass and willow handicrafts from Tanghe started to be exported internationally, marking a significant turning point in its development. As demand grew, the variety of products expanded, and the craftsmanship evolved, leading to a broader scale of production and more refined techniques. The quality of these crafts is highly regarded, especially those produced by the Wanfeng Handicraft Factory in Tanghe. These items are known for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and practicality. There are over 11 categories of straw products, including fruit boxes, paper baskets, bread boxes, and flower pot holders, while Liubian crafts feature items like flower pots, children’s baskets, cat litter trays, and bird nests, totaling 95 different specifications. The production process for both straw and Liubian crafts follows a similar set of steps: material selection, coloring, soaking, weaving, fumigation, sun-drying, and painting. Each stage is carefully executed by skilled artisans, ensuring high-quality results. Material selection is crucial—corn husks must be clean and white, while wheat straw should have a natural color and appropriate thickness. Wicker, particularly mature and smooth varieties, is ideal for weaving. After selecting the materials, they are colored according to design needs and soaked in water to make them flexible and easier to work with. Weaving is done using tools such as rulers and scissors, following precise patterns. Once completed, the items are cleaned, fumigated to enhance durability and prevent pests, then dried under the sun to avoid mold. Finally, a coat of varnish is applied to increase longevity and shine. Today, the grass and willow crafts from Tanghe have gained international recognition, with exports reaching countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Japan, and many others. The region's favorable conditions—abundant raw materials, a large labor force, and a long history of craftsmanship—make it well-suited for continued growth. With low investment and high returns, this industry offers a sustainable and profitable opportunity for local communities, ensuring that the art of Liu Bian continues to thrive for future generations.
