cartwheel wrap dress with gathered skirt

We’re thrilled to welcome back Ana Sofia today—she’s no stranger to these parts, having shared her fantastic tutorials like the Girl on the Go with Ruffles, Honeycomb Smocking Tutorial, and her Building Block series. This time, she’s here with something fresh and exciting: her latest sewing project! Let’s dive right in. ---

“I’m so excited to introduce you to this modified version of the Oliver + S Cartwheel Wrap Dress,” Ana Sofia shares. “It’s a pattern I tested recently, and while I initially had some reservations about whether it would suit my daughter’s taste, this dress ended up being a huge hit.”

“She absolutely loved how the dress fits snugly yet flows beautifully when wrapped around her body,” she continues. “The wrap design is brilliant—it’s simple yet ingenious, and it made me appreciate the craftsmanship even more as I sewed it together.”

“One of the best things about this dress is its versatility,” Ana adds. “I decided to modify it slightly by adding a gathered skirt instead of the original circle skirt. This gives it a completely different vibe while still staying true to the essence of the pattern.”

“To create the gathered skirt, all you need to do is measure the bodice piece and decide how much fullness you’d like to add,” she explains. “Then, simply cut out rectangles based on those dimensions and gather them at the top before attaching them to the bodice. It’s surprisingly straightforward!”

“For my version,” Ana notes, “I only increased the width of the skirt by 150%. If you want an even fuller look, increasing it to 200% would definitely work better. Just remember to refer to the Building Block Dress Book for tips—it’s incredibly helpful.”

“While I adore the classic circle skirt, the gathered version feels more timeless and elegant,” Ana reflects. “Plus, it doesn’t detract from the charm of the wrap design. In fact, we both fell in love with the finished product—the gathers add just enough flair without overshadowing the simplicity of the dress.”

“And let’s talk about the fabric choice,” Ana says with a grin. “My daughter picked out this adorable ice-cream print, and honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect. The colors pop beautifully against the gathered skirt, making the whole outfit feel cheerful and fun.”

“If you’re thinking about trying this modification yourself, don’t hesitate!” Ana encourages. “Not only does it breathe new life into the original pattern, but it also lets you play around with fabrics and styles until you find what works best for you or your little one.”

--- There you have it—a delightful take on a beloved pattern. Whether you’re a seasoned sewer or someone who’s just dipping their toes into the world of garment making, Ana Sofia’s tutorial proves that creativity knows no bounds. Give it a shot—you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve!
