Kathy, an esteemed member of the Advisors Circle, recently shared the delightful Playtime Dress she crafted for her cherished granddaughter. This charming creation features exquisite hand-embroidered details that truly elevate the piece, making it a standout project.
Even before her granddaughter was born, Kathy had already purchased fabric for her. At the time, she wasn’t fully aware of the importance of paying close attention to fabric weight when buying online. This Playtime dress, which ultimately took shape, serves as a perfect example. The fabric turned out to be a lightweight waffle knit, far lighter than she initially expected. However, she simply couldn’t resist the beautiful butterfly motifs and the lovely color palette.
She was drawn to the versatility of the Playtime dress pattern, as it can be made using either woven or knit fabrics. Concerned about the flimsiness of the waffle knit, she feared that a knit facing might not stay in place. With ample fabric at hand, she chose to double the bodice instead of using a facing. This decision proved incredibly effective, adding much-needed stability and durability for her active granddaughter. (Don’t be fooled by the photo!)
### Hand-Embroidered Detail
The pattern recommended machine-stitched collar outlines, but Kathy hadn’t enjoyed great success with machine embroidery in the past. Instead, she opted for hand-stitching, aiming for a three-dimensional effect. After flipping through her embroidery stitch book, she discovered a design she loved.
The butterfly buttons, sourced from Etsy several years ago, had been patiently waiting in her stash for the right moment to shine. To her delight, they matched perfectly! Although these wooden buttons may not last forever, they can easily be replaced with conventional ones once they wear out.
Naturally, Kathy also created a coordinating dress for her granddaughter’s 18-inch doll. She often adapts patterns from a doll-sized book to fit her needs. For this occasion, she made a simple knit top and attached a skirt.
And, of course, she couldn’t resist styling her granddaughter’s Playtime dress with her favorite Pokemon socks. Who could blame her? After all, the little one is quite the fashionista!
