Mindy brought these two elements together to create something truly unique. Fabric Choice: Quilting cotton was her material of choice. It provided just the right amount of structure without adding unnecessary weight. Was the Fabric Suitable? Absolutely! The quilting cotton held up beautifully, ensuring that the quilt block didn't cause the dress to sag or lose its shape. How Did the Sewing Go? Initially, adding a quilt block to the center of a dress pattern seemed daunting. However, driven by her desire to create something special for her daughter’s milestone birthday, Mindy dove right in. After completing the unicorn block, she carefully backed it with a piece of fabric before integrating it seamlessly into the dress design. This approach resulted in a cohesive large piece of fabric, which she then used to cut the front panel according to the pattern instructions. While there were additional internal seams to tidy up, the overall construction mirrored the original pattern closely. To compensate for the slightly wider O+S seam allowances compared to standard quilting seams, Mindy lost about 1/4 inch at the bottom of the block. She cleverly added a pieced strip using the same rainbow-colored fabrics along the hemline, utilizing the double-hem feature of the pattern to conceal any visible seams. Favorite Part: Watching the sparkly unicorn come to life while sewing was pure joy. Combining her passion for quilting with designing clothing for her children has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for Mindy. I hope this story inspires other craft enthusiasts to experiment with combining different sewing techniques! If you give this project a try, don’t hesitate to share your creations.
