Mindy crafted an adorable baby dress inspired by a quilt block pattern. In this week's Sew + Tell, she shares her process for creating it. Name: Mindy Sebastian

Online presence: Instagram Project Details Pattern Used: Oliver + S Ice Cream Dress paired with Kelli Fannin’s Unicorn block. Fabric Chosen: Quilting cotton. Was the Fabric Suitable? Absolutely! The quilting cotton provided just the right amount of stiffness, ensuring the quilt block didn't weigh down the dress. How Did the Sewing Go? Integrating a quilt block into the center of a dress seemed daunting at first, but I was set on making it happen for my daughter’s first birthday outfit. Once I finished the unicorn block, I attached a layer of fabric to its back and then carefully surrounded it with dress fabric to form one cohesive piece. From this larger fabric sheet, I cut out the front panel following the pattern instructions. While there were some additional internal seams to tidy up, I essentially followed the dress pattern to completion. However, I lost about 1/4 inch on the block’s base due to the wider seams used in the O+S pattern compared to traditional quilting methods. To complement the dress, I created a pieced strip using the same rainbow fabrics and cleverly hid the seams within the double-hem of the design. Favorite Part: Watching the tiny, sparkly unicorn come together as I stitched was such a joy. Blending my passion for quilting with sewing clothes for my girls turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Overall, this project was a fantastic opportunity to experiment with combining two creative outlets—quilting and garment sewing. It also gave me a chance to customize a beloved pattern to make something truly unique. I can’t wait to try more similar projects in the future!
