customizing the sunny day shorts: hexagon pockets
Today, we’re thrilled to have Sparrow from Pumpkin & Bunny share her fantastic tutorial on customizing the Sunny Day Shorts by adding hexagon-shaped patch pockets. Thank you so much for joining us, Sparrow!
I’ve always had a soft spot for geometric designs, particularly hexagons. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about how they seamlessly fit together—like golden honeycombs or sturdy bolts, blending the organic with the structured. When I stumbled upon this Riley Blake hexagon print fabric from their Life In The Jungle collection, I knew instantly that my son, Pumpkin, needed a shirt made from it. I enjoy creating complete outfits for my kids, so I paired the shirt with the Sunny Day Shorts pattern. This pattern is one of my favorites because it offers so much creative freedom—you can easily add personal touches without overcomplicating things. For this outfit, I wanted it to feel cohesive yet versatile enough for Pumpkin to mix and match with other pieces. That’s why I decided to incorporate hexagon-shaped patch pockets. It’s a subtle detail, but it ties everything together beautifully while adding visual interest to an otherwise straightforward design.
Now, before we dive into the process, let me assure you—it might look intricate, but this method of creating patch pockets is surprisingly easy. In fact, it’s one of my go-to techniques for making pockets because it allows you to experiment with different shapes. Today, however, I’ll focus specifically on turning the Sunny Day Shorts into these Honeycomb Shorts using hexagon pockets.
---

---
To begin, you’ll need to download the hexagon pocket template. There are three sizes available: 3 inches, 4 inches, and 4.5 inches wide. You’ll also need some lining fabric—I used a combination of prints and solids from quilting-weight cotton.
Start by cutting one hexagon piece from your main fabric and another from your lining for each pocket. Since you’ll need two pockets per size, that means cutting six pieces from your main fabric and six from your lining.
---

---
Next, place the two hexagons right sides together and stitch them together with a ¼-inch seam allowance. Be sure to leave one side of the hexagon open for turning it right side out later, and don’t forget to backstitch at both ends.
---

---
Once stitched, clip the corners carefully without cutting through the seams. Then, turn the hexagon right side out through the opening and press it flat. Make sure the edges of the opening are folded inward neatly.
---

---
After pressing, topstitch around the pocket approximately ¼ inch from the edge. If you're working with a heavier fabric, I recommend using two threads in your top needle for added durability.
---

---
Before attaching the pockets to the shorts, sew the outer side seams of both legs together. Leave the center seam open for now. Arrange the pockets as desired—typically, place the largest pocket about three inches from the bottom of the leg, followed by the medium and small ones above it. I positioned mine so that the medium hexagon faced forward slightly.
---

---
Securely topstitch the pockets along the edge, leaving one side open depending on your preference. For instance, I kept the edge near the seam open on the smaller and medium hexagons, while on the larger hexagon, I left two sides open but secured the topmost corner to prevent it from gapping.
---

---
Finally, finish constructing the shorts according to the pattern instructions. And voilà ! Your new hexagon-pocketed shorts are ready to impress.
---

---
I hope you found this tutorial enjoyable and informative. Thank you again for letting me share my ideas with all of you. Until next time, happy sewing!
