Science: Be careful about your clothes "toxic"

A lot of chemicals are used in the textile printing process, so we need to be more careful about buying home-made garments. A recent study by researchers at Stockholm University in Sweden found that there are a large number of chemical residues in clothing worn daily, and some of these harmful substances may become health “invisible killers.”

The researchers tested 60 garments from the Swedish and international apparel production chains. A preliminary analysis found that these clothes contained thousands of chemical substances and approximately 100 chemical substances were initially identified. Some of these substances do not come from producers, but may be chemical residues caused by the transport process.

Jowana Loongo, Ph.D., of analytical chemistry at Stockholm University, said: "Contact with these chemicals increases the risk of developing allergic dermatitis. These chemicals may also cause more harm to human health and the natural environment, some of which Has been suspected or proven to be a carcinogen, while others are toxic to aquatic life."

Based on the occurrence, quantity, toxicity, and ease of infiltration of these chemicals, the researchers selected four groups of substances for further analysis. Among them, the two substances with the highest concentrations in polyester clothing are quinoline and aromatic amines respectively, while the chemical substances with the highest content in cotton clothing are benzothiazole, and even organic cotton fabrics have residues.

Among them, quinoline is moderately toxic and can irritate the skin. Aromatic amines are a prohibited chemical dye due to its carcinogenicity. Benzothiazole is acutely toxic and can irritate eyes and skin and lightly harm water bodies.

The researchers cleaned the samples of clothing used for the study and measured the level of chemical residues in them. Some chemicals were washed away, but they became the “culprit” of contaminating the aquatic environment, while others remained high in clothing.

Non Woven Felt

What is the difference between woven and non-woven felt?

Non woven fabrics are fabrics that have not been woven. The viscose for chemical fiber is subjected to high temperature and high pressure to form a base cloth. Then, a layer of hot melt adhesive is placed on the surface of the base fabric through a coating machine, and then dried to form the Non Woven Fabric we use. The commonly used equipment for woven fabrics are key rod looms and water jet looms, which make polyester into base fabrics through weaving.
