Zero after the development of super-Taobao children's clothing online shopping size surge
The growth in early childhood development for children born in China after 2000 has seen a significant improvement, with some indicators showing a nearly 10% increase compared to 30 years ago. This trend is reflected not only in health surveys but also in everyday observations, such as the size of children's clothing sold online. According to Taobao’s recent "Children's Clothing Online Shopping Rankings," the average sizes of children's clothes currently sold on the platform are much larger than those from three decades ago, suggesting that today’s children are growing taller and healthier.
A 1975 survey by the Chinese Ministry of Health showed that children aged 6 to 7 had an average height of 112 cm. In contrast, data from Taobao’s sales records in October 2009 revealed that children of the same age now stand between 120 to 125 cm—more than a 7% increase. Moreover, other physical indicators like chest size and weight have also risen significantly over the past 30 years. These findings align closely with the 2005 National Fourth Children’s Physical Development Survey, confirming a consistent upward trend in child growth.
For instance, the height range for babies aged 6 to 12 months, as reflected in Taobao’s clothing size data, falls between 70-80 cm, which is almost identical to the Ministry of Health’s reported range of 69-78 cm—showing a mere ±2 cm difference. This consistency reinforces the conclusion that Chinese children are indeed growing faster and taller than previous generations.
According to DDNK_82002, a popular Taobao shop that has been operating for over four years, there has been a noticeable rise in demand for larger sizes of children’s clothing, especially in coastal regions. “In the past four years, we’ve seen a substantial increase in the size of children’s clothes,†the seller told reporters. “Compared to the same period in 2005, about one-quarter of the clothing sizes have increased.†This trend is most prominent in economically developed areas like Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shanghai, and Beijing, while inland provinces such as Xinjiang and Qinghai show less or no change.
Mr. Weng, who oversees the baby products category on Taobao, explained that the company had to adjust clothing sizes due to the rapid growth of children. “Since 2009, we've expanded the size range for children’s clothing significantly,†he said. “Today’s children are growing faster than our updates can keep up with.†The original size standards were based on data from 2003, which is now outdated. Without these adjustments, parents would struggle to find the right fit for their children based on age alone.
As a result, Taobao has increased the average size of children’s clothing by 10%, with infant sizes now ranging from 45 cm to 60 cm—a 30% increase. This reflects a broader shift in child development and highlights how economic growth, better nutrition, and improved healthcare have contributed to the physical development of modern Chinese children.
