We’re thrilled to welcome back the delightful Ana Sofia today! If you’ve been following along, you’ll remember her from previous visits where she shared tutorials like the "Girl on the Go with Ruffles," "Honeycomb Smocking Tutorial," and "Building Block Dress." Today, she’s back with another fantastic creation. Let’s take a look!

Hey everyone, I’m super excited to introduce you to a modified version of the Oliver + S Cartwheel Wrap Dress—this time featuring a gathered skirt! I had the privilege of testing this pattern, and while I initially had my doubts (you know, wondering if it would suit my daughter’s style), this dress ended up being a huge hit.
My daughter absolutely loved how the dress wraps around her body. It’s ingenious, isn’t it? I definitely experienced a few “wow†moments during the sewing process. Trust me, you will too!

Adding a gathered skirt to this dress is surprisingly straightforward. All you need to do is measure and draw out a couple of rectangles based on the width and length you desire. The width should match the bodice piece, and the length depends on your child’s height.
For this particular project, I made a slight adjustment to the pattern instructions. I gathered the top part of the skirt (both front and back) before attaching it to the bodice. This step ensures a nice fit and adds an extra touch of flair.
Since my daughter isn’t particularly fond of gathered skirts, I only increased the width by 150% compared to the bodice. However, if you want a fuller look, going for 200% would be ideal. For those who want to dive deeper into the technical side, I highly recommend checking out the Building Block Dress Book (page 74). It offers some great insights into modifying patterns with gathered skirts.

While I adore the original circle skirt, I personally prefer a gathered option. It gives the dress a classic and timeless vibe that perfectly complements the overall style of the pattern. The wrap design remains intact, though perhaps with slightly less twirl-factor. We both adore the final outcome, especially since she got to pick the fabric—her choice? Ice cream prints, naturally!

If you're feeling inspired, give this version a try! There’s something magical about creating something unique for someone you love.
