The new ski jacket uses a new wearable technology that absorbs sweat.

Swiss sportswear brand Kjus has launched the world's first garment with electronically controlled film that allows users to eliminate sweat through the touch of a button.

HYDRO_BOT was developed and patented by Swiss technology company Osmotex, which says it is the first "significant" innovation since the introduction of thin film technology 40 years ago.

After more than a decade of research and development by Swiss research institute EMPA (Swiss Federal Materials Science and Technology Laboratory) and fabric developer Schoeller, Kjus has integrated this technology into ski jackets.

Now, Kjus' 7SPHERE HYDRO_BOT ski jacket uses a technique called electro-osmosis to pull sweat away from the underwear. This overcomes the problem of sweat accumulating inside the skier's clothes and soaking the underwear.

The HYDRO_BOT technology is technically integrated into the jacket through a combination of two panels in the high sweat area of the back. The technology consists of a functional layer consisting of a diaphragm consisting of hundreds of millions of holes per square meter surrounded by conductive fabric. When a small electrical pulse is applied, the pores become a micropump, actively extracting sweat from the body and quickly and effectively separating it from the jacket. This feature can be turned on and off using the integrated control unit or Bluetooth in iPhone and Android compatible apps.

“HYDRO_BOT addresses one of the biggest challenges facing the skiing and sportswear industry – breathability, and the problem of skiers sweating below sub-zero temperatures while wearing warm, waterproof clothing,” Osmotex Chairman and General Manager Joacim Holter said.

So far, ski jackets that use general film cannot quickly absorb moisture from the body; especially at cooler temperatures, when the permeability of a typical film is reduced.

According to Kjus, the HYDRO_BOT jacket is 10 times more efficient than a typical film jacket and is not affected by low temperatures.

The company claims it is the first garment to match the sweating rate of the body in terms of breathability. Measuring the amount of sweat that passes through the panel, the app can also make practical recommendations on how to regulate body temperature, allowing skiers to minimize sweat production.

“Kjus creates clothing that allows athletes to focus on their performance and experience. For 20 years, Kjus has been researching and developing new fabrics and techniques to cope with the breathability of ski wear,” said Ken Kurtzweg, Kjus Innovation Director.

“7SPHERE HYDRO_BOT is a game-changing wearable technology jacket that represents a huge leap in our corporate mission, ensuring that skiers remain dry, warm and comfortable from the first to the last skiing during the day.”

The 7SPHERE HYDRO_BOT jacket was originally only available for menswear and retails for $1,699. It will be available on December 10th at and KJUS stores as well as select retailers.
